    Where can I find CALI lessons?

    All of the CALI lessons are available on the Web at http://www2.cali.org/. You can use the web versions both here at school and at home.

    How do I log on to the CALI Web site?

    Once you go to http://www2.cali.org/ select "CALI Lesson Download" and you'll be presented with a menu of subject areas.  Click on the subject area you are interested in and you will be presented with a list of lessons. You can run the lesson using the web browser (Netscape or Internet Explorer) without downloading, or you can download a Windows version, or a Macintosh version if that is what you have at home. Not all lessons have all download or web options, so read the instructions.

    Once you select a lesson, you will be asked to specify your school (MA-Northeastern University School of Law), put in the password (ask a librarian for the password), and after reading the agreement, click on "I Accept" at the bottom to start the lesson. (Just pressing the "Enter" key doesn't work.) Then do the lesson. Good luck.

    Access to CALI Lessons is restricted by license to Northeastern University School of Law students, faculty, and staff only. Those who qualify may request a password from a law library or computer services staff member.

    How do I download lessons from the Web?

    1. Start your web browser (ie. Netscape or Internet Explorer).
    2. Go to the CALI web site at http://www2.cali.org/
    3. Click on the category under which your lesson falls (e.g., Evidence).
    4. Scroll down to the lesson you want to install.
    5. Click on "Get Lesson"
    6. Under Step 1, select MA - Northeastern University School of Law.
    7. Under Step 2, enter the password (ask a librarian)
    8. Under Step 3, click on the radio button that says "Download a Windows version".
    1. Under Step 4, click on the I Accept button.

    At the bottom of the next screen is a list of files that need to be installed in order to run your lesson. The file under Lessons is the actual file used to run your lesson. The files under Packages are supplementary files that your lesson uses to run. Note that once a package is installed on your computer, it does not need to be installed again (i.e., if you have already installed the MiniMenu package for another lesson, you do not have to install it again for subsequent lessons).

    1. For each file that needs to be installed (see preceding paragraph for exceptions), follow these steps:
      1. Click on its icon on the left.
      2. In the Save in: box, scroll up to the top and click on Desktop.
      3. Click on the Save button.
    1. Close your web browser.
    2. On the desktop, there should be an icon for each file you downloaded in step 9. For each file, follow these steps:
      • Double-click on the icon on the desktop.
      • You will see a series of dialog boxes and instructions, depending on the files being installed. The instructions should be relatively straightforward. For the lesson file, you will be prompted to unzip some files to the c:\ccali directory. For the package files, you will probably see something similar, although you may see a variety of other dialog boxes as well. Follow the instructions as best you can.
      • If the installation program left any windows open, you can close them. For example, the u_menu package leaves a maroon window with an OK button open. You can close the window by clicking OK.
    1. Double-click on My Computer.
    2. Double-click on the C: drive.
    3. Double-click on the ccali directory.
    4. Double-click on the minimenu icon.
    A list of installed lessons will appear. To begin, double-click on the lesson you want to run.

    When you are finished with the installation, you can delete any of the icons off your desktop that you downloaded in step 9. All necessary files will have been located in the c:\ccali directory.

    There are also a series of FAQ's at http://www2.cali.org/index.php?fuseaction=lessons.faq that may be referred to if you have any problems with the CALI lessons.

    How do I print my results?

    If you are doing a DOS based CALI lesson, to save/print your results, follow this procedure:
    1. Select all text on the results screen by clicking and dragging with the mouse;
    2. Click on the Edit menu, then the "Copy" command to copy to the CALI >clipboard;
    3. "Show" the CALI clipboard by clicking on the CALI Edit menu, then the "Show Clipboard" command;
    4. Click on the File menu, then the "Save Notes" command.
    5. Save the file in C:\TEMP - with a unique file name (for each screen of results) that you will remember.
    6. Repeat steps 1-5 for all results screens.
    7. Open the files saved in steps 1-6 using Word or WordPerfect;
    8. Print the files.

    How do I tell which printer my printouts are going to?

    Under most circumstances, printouts will go to the default printer. To determine the default printer, follow these steps:
    1. Go to Start -> Settings -> Printers
    2. Right-click on each printer name. The default printer will have a check mark next to "Set As Default" on the right-click menu.
    Depending on the software and the method you choose to print (i.e., File -> Print or Print icon or Ctrl-P), the program may ask you which printer you want to print to.

    Also, while print jobs are being prepared/spooled, the printer icon should appear in the lower, right-hand corner of the screen, next to the clock. Double-clicking on that printer icon will bring up the printer that you currently have print jobs in.

    The name of each printer is taped to the top of the printer.
