Loan Deferral/Forgiveness Program (LD/F)
Northeastern
University School of Law launched the Loan Deferral and Forgiveness (LD/F)
Program in 1987. Since 1990, we have awarded more than $2 million in loans
and grants to 325 graduates working for legal services, public defender, government,
nonprofit advocacy organizations, and unions as well as, in some limited
circumstances, small public interest law practices.
In 2007, the
program anticipates providing $230,000 in loan relief assistance to approximately
60 applicants. Graduates from the classes of 1987 through 2007 who are engaged
in public service practice and meet the program's financial eligibility criteria
are eligible and encouraged to apply.
The
Federal Student Loan Forgiveness Law: College Cost Reduction and
Access Act of 2007 has many implications for public service in the U.S.
and will enable many more graduates to pursue public interest
employment. Equal Justice Works has provided some resources for more information about the law and what it means to you.
The 2009 Round One Deadline for LD/F Funding is October 31, 2008. Round Two Deadline is May 31, 2009;
Applicants who do not have a
qualifying position by October 31st, but obtain one after this deadline
can apply for Round Two Consideration.
