Assignment for Class 1:
Read Merges, Menell & Lemley, Intellectual
Property in the New Technological Age, (3d ed. 2003), p.1-25 (introduction
to intellectual property) and p.319-335 (introduction to copyright;
originality requirement). In addition, in the Case and Statutory Supplement, read §§ 101 and
102 of the Copyright Act (read 102 carefully; skim 101, but focus carefully on
the definitions of compilation; copies; derivative work).
Course Requirements/Evaluation: There will be a 3-hour, in-class, open book
exam, upon which the evaluations will primarily be based. Depending on enrollment numbers, I may also
require each student to complete a problem consisting of a short writing
assignment and an in-class presentation.
