THE ACADEMIC SUCCESS PROGRAM
The Academic Success Program offers several services including:
Teaching Assistants (TA'S) in study skills.
If you need help reading cases, knowing what is important to take notes on
in your classes, learning to outline courses, and preparing for exams, an
ASP TA can help you. TA's are selected third year students who have done
well in courses and on co-ops and have an interest in working with first
year students. They are available on a drop-in basis in CG14 at specified
office hours. The Analytical Skills Workshop ("ASW")
is offered weekly. The ASW, taught by Professor Brook Baker, attempts to
demystify the law school learning process by explicit discussion of study
skills, conventions of legal analysis, and exam preparation strategies. The
workshop is participatory, engaging students in their own learning process.
The time and place for this workshop is on the regular course schedule.
The weekly topics are posted on the Academic Success Program bulletin board.
One-time workshops
on such topics as: case reading and briefing, course outlining, taking exams,
time management, and several other topics. These workshops are advertised
on the WEBoard as well as on the Academic Success Program bulletin board.
Materials
such as weekly planners, studying and exam writing tips, analysis flow charts,
and other helpful information is available in the Academic Success Program
room (14CG). Assistance to individual students.
The Academic Success Program Director, Melinda Drew, works with individual
students and small groups of students on exam taking strategies and provides
one-to-one assistance to students as needed. She also coordinates referrals
for counseling services to the University's Health and Counseling Service
and its Disability Resource Center. Assistance in forming study groups.
For those of you who would like to be in a study group, but haven't yet found
people you want to work with, the ASP will assist you in finding compatible
study partners or a study group. Bar exam preparation.
We offer a series of workshops, panels, and classes aimed toward helping
our students prepare for the bar examination. We begin with a general introduction
to the bar exam for first year students and offer a free, not for credit
bar preparation course as well as a panel on how to prepare for the bar exam
(co-sponsored with Career Services) for third year students. General information.
The Academic Success Program functions as a kind of "clearinghouse." If you
don't know where else to find information you need, we can probably steer
you in the right direction so come and ask! For
additional information on these and other Academic Success Program services,
please consult the Academic Success Program Guide to Academic and Disability
Services (available online or in hard copy from Student Services or from
the ASP Director).
