The Co-op
Experience
September 2007
Intern Edition:
My Co-op at NPR
by Bernice
Lee ‘08
For
my summer co-op, I worked in the Office of the General Counsel at
National
Public Radio, Inc, a
privately supported, not-for-profit membership organization that serves
26
million listeners every month through over 800 independently operated,
noncommercial public radio stations. Comprised of seven attorneys, each
specializing in different areas of law, the office manages all the
legal
affairs of NPR.
The
day I arrived at NPR, the Vice President for Legal Affairs and General
Counsel
asked me to draft a contract. Initially,
I was concerned. While I had read many
contracts, and read cases concerning contracts, I had never written one. The anxiety, however, soon dissipated and
after a few hours, I had drafted a contract to the liking of the
General
Counsel. The practical experience I’ve
gained during this internship is invaluable and unlike the more
theoretical
knowledge gained in the classroom. During
the internship, in addition to working
on contracts, I have
worked on a wide variety of legal issues including trademark, labor and
employment, the internet, and international privacy.
In
addition to being a legal intern, I was also the photo editor and
photographer
for Intern Edition, a radio-web show created wholly by
NPR interns. As the photo editor, I had
the opportunity to
meet many of the other interns for such shows as All
Things Considered and Morning
Edition, and also other departments, such as digital media and
communications. I’ve also gone with
other interns, working as reporters, to photograph their stories. This has taken me to such places as a tattoo
parlor and a used bookstore.
