The Co-op
Experience
Welcome to The Co-op
Experience, a new feature of our website and NUSL Newsbriefs
(our online newsletter for alumni/ae) that will offer brief, informal
pieces written by NUSL students
about their unique co-op experiences. We plan to offer this feature periodically in NUSL Newsbriefs and we will also
maintain an archive of stories on the law school website.
Enjoy!

In the Public Interest: Rebuilding New Orleans – by
Jennifer Schlissel ‘09
Like
many others, I witnessed the dramatic images in the wake of Hurricanes
Katrina and Rita and wanted to contribute to efforts to rebuild New
Orleans. I decided to work with New Orleans Legal Assistance in their
Housing Law Unit. This afforded me a unique view
of the many challenges low-income residents of New Orleans face in
their efforts to return home. [ Read

WiFi Boston: Helping the
City Go Wireless – by
Paula Lyons ‘09
As
a
Rappaport Fellow in Law and Public Policy, awarded each year to
fourteen
Boston-area law students, I worked in the City of Boston Law Department
for my
first co-op where I helped structure the legal and policy contours of
the
City’s new wireless Internet initiative. The
goals of this ambitious project,
introduced by Mayor Thomas Menino,
are to minimize the digital divide, promote economic development,
stimulate
innovation, and improve the quality and efficiency of City services. [ Read more

Standing up for Liberty in the U.K. – by
Alexandra Pray ‘08
I knew
before starting my co-op that Liberty
is “one of
the leading human rights groups in the United Kingdom,” but I

of a national controversy over whether the United Kingdom’s
Attorney General
had advised the Army to ignore the Human Rights Act in its treatment of
Iraqi
detainees. [ Read more]

My Co-op at NPR – by Bernice Lee ‘08
For
my summer co-op, I worked in the Office of the General Counsel at
National
Public Radio, Inc, a
privately supported, not-for-profit membership organization that serves
26
million listeners every month through over 800 independently operated,
noncommercial public radio stations. Comprised of seven attorneys, each
specializing in different areas of law, the office manages all the
legal affairs
of NPR. [ Read more ]
Patent Law
Co-op gets an
“Outstanding” – by
Lindsay Wood ‘08
“Outstanding”
is the
word I would use to describe my summer working at Day Casebeer Madrid
&
Batchelder, LLP, a boutique law firm involved with high tech patent
litigation. Throughout my co-op, I worked
alongside some
of the most talented and creative lawyers in this exciting area of law. I was given the same assignments as first,
second, and third year associates, completing claim construction
charts,
summarizing patent prosecution history for software patents, and
attending
interviews of expert witnesses. [ Read more
