| CAPITAL GIVING - Building our
Future
The strength of our school and our
ability to plan for the future depends in large part on the resources we
can depend on for our programs and future growth. Naturally, we rely
heavily on tuition dollars for the bulk of our operating budget.
Your annual gifts also contribute to our operating budget and specific
program areas that you designate. As we strategize about securing
the future financial stability of the School of Law, the resources available
to us from our endowment and its endowed funds play an important role.
Endowed and Expendable Funds
As of June 30, 2003, the market value
of the School of Law's endowment was $8,905,474. This endowment currently
provides approximately $415,219 in annual expendable income for our programs and
is a permanent source of income. Our endowment is composed of approximately
64 seperate funds that supply unrestricted support for general purposes,
as well as restricted support for scholarships, co-op stipends and
faculty support.
However, with an annual budget of
more than $14 million, this stream of constant support offsets and supplements
only a small percentage of our overall financial needs. Increasing
the size, and thus significance, of our permanent endowment is therefore
an ongoing priority.
Endowed funds may be established
to support scholarships, co-op stipends, the library or any of our program
areas. With a minimum gift of $50,000, an endowed fund may be created
and named in honor of the donor or as directed. The income earned
from this fund is used each year for the designated purpose. The
list of endowed funds supporting the School of Law grows each year.
To facilitate and encourage these
significant gifts, the School of Law encourages multi-year pledges, payable
over one to five years. Our fiscal year ends on June 30th. You will
not receive additional phone or mail appeals during the year after you
make a pledge, which saves the school printing and postage costs. You can
also make expendable pledges over several years to a particular program
such as the library, scholarship or the Fund for the Public Interest.
The Committee of 100
To salute the confidence of our graduates
and friends in the mission and direction of our law school and to strengthen
our fundraising efforts, the School of Law has established the Committee
of 100 to recognize and inspire those alumni/ae and friends who support
the School of Law with unrestricted leadership support.
We seek at least 100 alumni/ae and
friends to join the Committee of 100 with unrestricted gift commitments
of $25,000 or more over the next few years. Committee of 100 members
will be acknowledged in the annual giving report and in various university
acknowledgments. Committee of 100 members are also given membership
in the university's top recognition group, The Huntington Society.
The Huntington Society
The Huntington Society recognizes
Northeastern University's most generous individual donors. The Sponsors,
Patrons and Benefactors of the Huntington Society provide vital support
for academic excellence and the university's continuing quest for national
prominence as a research university that is student-centered, practice-oriented,
and urban. Individuals who pledge at least $25,000, payable over
five years, are recognized in the Huntington Society. Matching gifts
are not included. Recognition continues for five years and may be
renewed with additional commitments after the initial gift is complete.
